Keynote on AI and leadership

Leadership and Management in the AI Era

AI is changing how more and more teams work. Leadership is changing with it. You have to set direction, make decisions and lead people and AI together, while you are still learning what AI can do.

Leaders have to guide their teams through the arrival of AI while they are still learning what the technology can do.

Leadership and Management in the AI Era draws on lessons from practice: the technology of AI is often the easy part, while behaviour and culture decide whether it works. AI models the possible consequences of a decision, spots shifts in demand and already handles tasks independently in some processes. That changes your work as a leader. Jobs, work and tasks take a different shape, and you now lead employees and AI agents at the same time. Your team can see their jobs changing around them, and they have to come along. Nobody knows the final shape of that change, yet you still have to choose a direction, explain it and adjust it. This keynote puts the leader at the centre: setting direction without a blueprint, knowing enough about AI to ask good questions, making better decisions and leading a human-AI team. How do you set a direction when nobody knows how AI will change your team's work?

The leader

A clear direction

Choosing a direction, developing a vision of the future and starting before the full picture emerges.

  1. 01

Leadership without a clear end point

Nobody knows where AI and new technology will be in a few years. Leaders still choose a direction, explain it and adjust when the facts change.

  2. 02

    A vision tested against scenarios

A vision beyond technology: what the organisation is for in ten years' time, tested against several scenarios rather than a single prediction.

  3. 03

    Taking the initiative

Starting before every answer is clear: experimenting yourself, bringing the team along and showing together what it delivers.

What AI can do

What leaders need to know

Enough understanding of AI to ask good questions, choose opportunities and make better decisions.

  1. 04

What AI can and cannot do

AI predicts, creates text and images, and as an agent carries out tasks itself. Leaders who know what each type can do also see its limits.

  2. 05

    Where AI delivers value

AI's value varies by process, as do the requirements: usable data, a clear way of working and someone responsible for the result.

  3. 06
    Pilot phase

    Decisions with AI

AI as a sounding board: testing scenarios, finding counterarguments and collating current management information. The leader decides.

  4. 07

    Data as the foundation

AI is only as good as the data behind it. Leaders decide which data matters, who owns it and how it stays reliable.

  5. 08

    Measuring what it delivers

Not counting how many people use AI, but measuring what it changes: lead times, errors, customer satisfaction. And defining success in advance.

  6. 09

    Responsible and accountable

AI makes proposals; a person stays responsible. Leaders decide where someone checks: the bigger the consequences, the closer to the decision.

From the keynote
Teams learning to work with AI often find out what is possible sooner than they expect. When a leader gives AI experiments room, the team starts doing work it could not get round to a year earlier.

People & culture

Leadership in practice

Leading a human-AI team, helping people through change and developing talent.

  1. 10

    The AI-first organisation

A leader decides which work AI takes over. People focus on judgement, choices and contact with customers and colleagues.

  2. 11
    Pilot phase

    Leading people and AI

Leading a human-AI team means reallocating work, setting limits on what AI agents can do independently and assessing everyone's results.

  3. 12

    A team facing change

Workload, professional identity, doubt and motivation. Leaders give their teams a say in the changes and room to ask questions.

  4. 13

    Developing and retaining talent

AI skills are becoming a measure of talent. Leaders develop, recruit and retain people whose work is changing around them.

  5. 14

    Learning at the top

Leaders who use AI themselves ask better questions and set the example. The organisation takes charge of the knowledge of tomorrow.

  6. 15

    What employees already do

Employees often use AI already, with or without permission. Leaders do not ban it; they give direction and learn from what people have found.

  7. 16

    Innovation in a slow organisation

Old systems, rules and habits slow innovation. Leaders change them step by step, without waiting for a major reorganisation.

  8. 17

AI is not an IT project

Park AI in one department and you get a departmental result. The work changes in line teams, and that is where ownership belongs.

  9. 18

    Where people stay

Not everything that can be automated should be. Leaders choose deliberately where a person makes the difference: in doubt, emotion and complaints.

  10. 19

    The leader's ecosystem

Many solutions come from outside. Leaders build an ecosystem of partners, start-ups, researchers and peers, across borders too.

The other side

The other side responsibility, security and trust

AI also calls for vigilance. The top carries responsibility for the transformation, for digital security and for trust that messages are genuine.

  1. 20

    Transformation starts with the board

Making the AI transformation succeed is becoming a board matter. The board sets the direction, allocates the resources and follows progress.

  2. 21

Digital security as a board duty

European rules make digital security a duty of the board itself. Directors know the risks, take decisions on them and oversee the response.

  3. 22

    Real or fake?

With AI, criminals clone voices, hack systems and deploy ransomware. Good security and agreed procedures make it harder for them.

Frequently asked questions

Who is this keynote for?

Anyone leading while AI changes work: executive teams, management teams, team leaders, board members and supervisory directors. It suits leadership days, management conferences, board meetings and congresses, with audiences ranging from a management team of twelve to hundreds of leaders. It also works for events for staff, clients and business partners.

What will the audience take away?

A clear understanding of what AI can and cannot do, without technical detail. A way to maintain direction when nobody knows how things will turn out. And an understanding of how collaboration between people and AI changes leadership, work and responsibility.

How does this differ from The Organisation of the Future?

The Organisation of the Future examines how organisations adapt when developments move quickly: ecosystems, experimentation and future scenarios, with AI as one of those developments. This keynote focuses on the leader: setting direction, making decisions, leading people and AI, and helping the team through change. If you are unsure which fits, we can advise during the introductory call.

Is the keynote tailored to our sector?

Yes. The introductory call covers your audience, sector and the questions your leaders face. Examples reflect your audience's work: a housing association's management team will hear different examples from manufacturing leaders or a hospital's executive team. Each sector also has its own page.

Does the keynote cover AI risks?

Yes, always. It covers AI transformation as a measure of the CEO and board's performance, directors' own cybersecurity duties and potential personal liability, and criminals using AI to copy directors' voices and faces to obtain payments. It also addresses the underlying ethical choices: how much authority AI receives, what that means for employees and which responsibilities stay with people.

How long is the keynote?

30, 45 or 60 minutes, and longer if you wish, with time for audience questions. If you want to go further, there are masterclasses, boardroom sessions for executives, board members and other leaders, and workshops for all employees.

Can the keynote be delivered in English or online?

Yes, in Dutch or English, in person or online. Richard has spoken in more than 30 countries.

How much does Leadership and Management in the AI Era cost?

Keynotes start from €3,500 (webinar). The price depends on location, duration and any tailoring you would like. Send your date and a short description of your audience, and our proposal will give the fee for your event.
